Learn How to Play Songs on
Guitar
Its versatility, compact size and the fact that you can play folk, country, rock, jazz, or
any other music genre on it, makes the guitar the single most popular instrument to learn to play.
To put it in simple terms, learning how to play the guitar can
give you the ability to play your favorite songs.
But just like any instrument (or
anything worth learning for that matter), learning to play the guitar can take a good deal of
patience, perseverance, and good old-fashioned practice. For those who stick with it though, learning how to
play the guitar can be an amazingly rewarding experience and can provide years of personal
enjoyment.
As you are learning how to play songs on guitar, you
will have to tolerate some temporary physical discomfort. At first, your finger tips will
become sore from pressing the strings against the neck of the
guitar. After a short time, your finger tips will develop callouses and
the discomfort will go away.
Your hands may cramp a little when you start learning the
different chords, because you are putting your fingers in unusual positions. Your shoulders will
probably get tired too.
Remember, every great guitar player had to start at the beginning
just like you. They experienced the same sore fingers and tired shoulders that you will
face. I'm afraid that “No pain, no gain” applies when you are first learning how to play the
guitar.
Before you can play your guitar, you have to know how to
tune it. In order to produce good sounds, your guitar needs proper tuning.
Most guitars have six strings. The first string is the lower E
string which is at the top of the guitar neck as you are holding it in playing position. The next string
is A (2nd from the top), D string (3rd from the top), G string (fourth from the top), B string
(5th from the top). The last string on the bottom is the high E string.
To help you with tuning, you can get an inexpensive electronic
tuner at most music stores. As you pluck each string, the tuner will show you whether the string is in
tune or not. If a string is not in tune, the tuner will show you whether you need to tighten or loosen
the string to get it into tune. That may sound complicated but it's really simple once you get the hang of
it.
Take your guitar with you to a local music store. Ask the person
helping you which tuner you should buy (get one of the least expensive). Ask the guitar store
person to show you how to use the tuner to tune your guitar.
Tuning your guitar is one of the first skills you need to
learn. Once you learn how, you'll feel confident that your guitar will sound
great anytime you are ready to play.
Once your guitar is
properly tuned, you are ready to begin your lessons. At first you will learn how to play basic guitar chords,
A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Later you will learn more complex chords that will help you produce richer, more
interesting sounds.
Y
ou will learn that most songs follow a simple pattern
called 1, 4, 5. That means that if the song begins on a C chord, then C is 1. If C is 1 then D is 2, E
is 3 and so on. So a 1, 4, 5 pattern beginning with C is played C, F, G.
You simply play
the C chord for a few beats then change to F and then to G.You will be amazed at how many different songs you will be able
to play by just following this basic pattern.
You will also learn
how to play guitar tab. Guitar “tab” is short for tablature. Tab consists of simplified diagrams of notes and
chords designed to help you play guitar easy…without having to learn to read music. Pretty
cool.
That’s it! Those
are the basics of playing songs on the guitar. They apply whether you are learning how to play
an electric guitar or how to play a acoustic guitar.
Remember that practice makes perfect.
If you become
frustrated, put your guitar down for a while and come back to it later. You must be persistent though. Set
aside time each day to follow the lessons and practice.
Soon you will be
playing easy songs on guitar. Little by little you will make improvements and before long, you'll be
able to play guitar and sing at the same time. You’ll surprise yourself by how great you
sound.
